TLCS volunteer, Jenn Buchanan, was honored at Consumer Speaks last Friday as the Volunteer of the Year and it was very well deserved recognition. Jenn came to TLCS pretty broken by her own admission. She struggled with mental illness and substance abuse following a childhood filled with trauma. As she worked to deal with her issues she has blossomed into a competent woman who is willing to share her story to help others. For the last 3 years Jenn has spent many weeks answering the TLCS "Hope Line" a peer operated warm line TLCS clients who need someone to talk to that truly understands. She has been a member of the speakers bureau, an active member of the TLCS volunteer committee, and since November, a peer mentor at the TLCS Clubhouse. In this role she has been instrumental in program design and implementation.
"It's been my pleasure to make speeches at high schools; it's been my pleasure to work with everybody. The new thing I'm doing is The Clubhouse. It's a place for people, in a nonclinical setting, to come and be themselves. In the seven and a half months we've been open, I've seen so much growth in the clientele and even in the volunteer workers. I am so honored."
It has been OUR pleasure to know Jenn. Watch Jenn's acceptance speech here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHDMp0ugm0A
